Roosevelt Island New York City

GOOD SHEPHERD PLAZA

As the central plaza in the heart of Roosevelt Island, this public space is used for large gatherings such as Roosevelt Island Day and small passive seating areas.  We worked with an active community to develop a program to revitalize the plaza and a large barren  landscape  area .  The plaza is now surrounded by  year round plantings and the newly landscaped garden is lush with perennials, flowers, ornamental trees, features sculpture by local artist and all  arranged around a variety of seating areas.

Daylighting of the Saw Mill River at the Mill Street Courtyard Yonkers, N.Y.

2017 NJASLA Design Award

The project involved taking an inner city block in the historic Yonkers downtown and transforming it to an open pedestrian space. An underground flume of the Saw Mill River, a tributary of the Hudson River, has run within the courtyard block for 100 years. Essential to the design was the day lighting of the river in two sections to create a unique water feature.

Designed as a “Woonerf”, or shared street, the new courtyard features paved walkways, extensive landscaping, rain gardens to catch storm water, and granite benches. A new mosaic column sculpture designed by a local artist Haifa Bint-kadi is centered on the plaza overlooking the river.

The view and sounds of the river can be enjoyed from a granite and wood amphitheater and crossed over by two stunning wood and steel pedestrian, handicap access bridges. A new vehicular bridge allows service access.

Millburn Sculpture Garden

We were asked to expand a part of the town green into a sculpture garden to showcase a new sculpture that has been donated to the Library. The new sculpture known as 'Rotare" joins the existing sculpture "Inspiration" both created by local artists. The garden will be both a space for contemplative seating as well as small gatherings and celebrations.

Harrison Street Park, Princeton, N.J.

The Rehabilitation of this 3 acre neighborhood park in the heart of Princeton Borough is a collaborative process with the Borough and the Residents surrounding the park.  We worked with SALT Design Studio Landscape Architects to develop a design that is reflective of the needs of the residents and the strong desire to keep the park’s heavily treed areas and open field.

We have introduced a sustainable landscape design that directs  storm water into rain gardens where boardwalks  pass over. Among the many play experiences there is a plan for  a featured Tree house will be nestled among the large Oaks in the park as a central architectural component and play element for children.

Ford Leonard Towers, City of Elizabeth Housing Authority, Elizabeth, N.J.

The renovation for this public senior housing project in the City of Elizabeth features extensive new landscaping, fencing, removal of concrete paving and a newly paved parking lot.  The landscape is a predominantly native plant palette with no irrigation.  We have also added new seating areas and a community garden in the rear yard of the complex.

Bungalow Park, Atlantic City, N.J.

Working with the Marathon Engineers and the City of Atlantic City, we are designing a new park with a central water feature and sprayground for the children in this downtown neighborhood. Millburn Courtyard, Millburn, N.J.

WINNER OF THE 2004 EXCELLENCE AWARD FROM DOWNTOWN NEW JERSEY, INC.  We have redesigned a central courtyard space in the center of the downtown surrounded by commercial properties. The new design replaces a brick paved area and an old oversize concrete fountain.  The space lends itself to a variety of uses: outdoor dining, summertime entertainment, an interactive water feature, strolling and passive landscaped seating areas. The entrance alley with signage, landscaping and a stone channel encourages people to enter from Main Street.

9-11 Memorial: Millburn, NJ

We designed a memorial for the eight residents of this town who perished in the 9-11 terrorist attacks. In a quiet area of the townships’ central Taylor Park, along the Rahway River is a small circular plaza area with a stone wall that is set off center. There are three granite panels, two of which have four names engraved and the central panel describing the event. It is meant as a contemplative space for which to come and reflect.
